Inspiring every Generation

Developing the educational and learning potential of Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings is central to the Friends. Initial school visits began in 2010 as a result of Martin Wilson pupils’ curiosity about the scaffold covered main mill building. Following a site visit they devised a costumed drama production which took place in the November of that year to the delight of audiences in school and on site. For most of the pupils, this trip to the Shrewsbury Flaxmill represented the first time they have visited a historic site or explored their local heritage.

The Friends have appointed Fay Bailey in the role of Development Officer and David Purslow, Martin Wilson Head teacher, has joined out trustee board. Fay will develop a range of learning resources, workshops and outreach activities designed to inspire and enthuse learners about this internationally significant building. Fay will be working in partnerships with family learning organisations, schools, further education establishments, the local community and employment training services to create a range of opportunities which will be trialled during the mill’s development phase and run on the site from 2015.

We have established an Education Advisory Group to consult on the education work taking place at the Flaxmill. The group is made up from representatives of the Friends’ Board & Committee, education providers, residents and heritage organisations. The aim of the group is to ensure the education and learning activities planned for the site meet the identified needs of all, to share knowledge and expertise and provide networking opportunities for education professionals.
We won’t be limiting the opportunities for learning to those in education. We want to have a mix of formal and informal learning opportunities and events for all. We are also investigating opportunities for developing apprenticeships once the site is operational.

Fay is seeking comments from schools and family groups about the opportunities planned for the redeveloped Flaxmill Maltings. If you would like to participate in either of the surveys please complete the questionnaires at:
