Hoardings Project

Two new boards have gone up as part of the Friends' project to decorate the hoardings around the Flaxmill Maltings. One celebrates old Shrewsbury Breweries, whilst the second depicts stories from the Castlefields and Ditherington 'Walking Past' initiative presented as collages by the 'Sabrinians'.

If you would like to take part in this project, and decorate a board for the hoardings, please email richard@flaxmill-maltings.co.uk.

This is open to both groups and individuals, and we will supply the boards and materials and will varnish them prior to hanging. We've even got plenty of space here at Flaxivity for you to work in if you prefer!

Work continues at the Flaxmill Maltings

Phase one comprises:

  • The current demolition of the 1950’s silo providing further external space for cultural, interpretation and public realm use.
  • The conversion of the office and stables for use by the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings as a visitor centre for reception, interpretation, learning and activities.

This work is now well underway thanks to the initiative of English Heritage and the European Regional Development fund

Heritage clothing sewing group

Following the successful workshop at the end of last month we have now embarked on a project to make replica 19th century clothing. These will be then be used for educational activities and open ovents.

The initial workshop in October was very popular, with 15 people attending and another 6 joining the follow up workshops.  This workshop was a full day, with Sarah Thursfield showing us what the Flaxmill apprentice children would have worn.

We began with bonnets, hand-stitching very fine seams, one or two finished on the day.

The group plans to meet monthly at the Museum in Shrewsbury for a morning to increase our collection of clothes.  Our next venture is pinafores, then boys’ caps.
